Spell #8 In The Landscape of Language, pp. 154 - 179

Found on page 158, the last paragraph

"Thus, when an Apache person offends the community by a certain action, one of his or her elders will wait for an appropriate moment perhaps at a community gathering and will then "shoot" the person by recounting an appropriate agodzaahi story. Although the offender is not identified or named aloud, he or she will know, if the "arrow" (the tale) has been well chosen and well aimed, that he will feel the story penetrate deep beneath his skin and sap his strength, making him feel ill and weak"

Artist Statement: The text above made me think of a very colorful gathering where everyone in the community is invited. This is why I made my drawing colorful. I thought about the story that is told to the "offender" and how it is causing lasting shame and torment. It is described as hell. I wanted to depict two people as one, in hell.
