"Our first writing was our own tracks, our footprints, our handprints in mud or ash pressed upon the rock." (page 96, first sentence of the second to last paragraph)
"All of the early writing systems of our species remain tied to the mysteries of a more than human world. On rocks, canyon walls, and caves these figures mingle with human shapes, or shapes part human and part Other (part insect. or owl, or elk)"

Artist Statement: When I read this paragraph I instantly thought of cave paintings, and how people created them thousands of years ago to communicate and tell stories. I decided to recreate one of these cave paintings using watered down acrylics on water color paper.
